Abstract: This paper encompassed some social and socio-economic aspects of the inhabitants at Lower Atbara area these issues included (a)ethnic composition (b)community construction due to age and sex (c)migrating groups and densities (d)economic activities and standard of living (e)labours (f)community services. There was an urgent need for availability of drinking water for irrigation. The inhabitants pointed out to causes environment degradation as (1)shortage in rainfall (2)decrease in water level of the Atbara River (3)deterioration in soil fertility, vegetational cover and crop production (4)decrease in animal production due to increase in animals' diseases.
Description: The seminar represented the final stage in the study of environmental conditions in Lower Atbara that lasted for over two years. This work was done jointly by IES and Clark University USA Programme of Environmental Training and Management in Africa (ETMA).
