Author: Elmangouri, Hassan Abdalla; Institute of Environmental Studies
Abstract: The present work is concerned with some aspects related to the physical and non-physical environment of Umm Kadda area in Eastern Darfur. The work is an outgrowth of research on environmental changes as caused by prolonged drouhgt conditions and irrational interference of man. This particular sites stands out for its remoteness from the centre of development in eastern Sudan and for its harsh environmental conditions. Rapid changes, particularly in the last few decades in the sphere of socio-economic life, have left their impacts on natural resource and population dynamics. Accordingly the area is found to be interested in many respects. This work is primarily composed of three main phases complementing each other. The first phase is mainly resource inventory report whose main objectives were to pick the indicators of change and review the physical and non-physical component of the area in the past hundred years. For monitoring purposes and formulation of future plans this phase is extremely important. In this respect both environmental stimuli and human responses are taken as the main focus of the study. Basic information was gathered from the civil secretary reports of the British Administration in Sudan prior to the independence of the country. Other sources were from Sudan Notes and Records, scattered administrative reports and information fragmented in literature. The second phase was based on phase one, data for this phase were mainly collected through field research conducted by scholars with different academic backgrounds. This work was presented under the heading of Environmental Monitoring which was mainly analysis and assessment of data collected through a number of field investigations. Together with part one it presented the main features of change and transformation and attempts to measure the magnitude of environmental degradation with the aim of formulating future plans to correct the situation in the area.Phase three was concerned with the organization and conduction of regional seminar at Umm Kadda Town. The idea was to disseminate the knowledge gained through the previous phases among the local inhabitants. The meeting of scientists from different academic disciplines at central and regional levels together with the actual affected people within the affected area is intended to add new scientific perspectives by investigating degraded and desertified areas.
