Title: Multi-Temporal Analysis of Land Use/ land Cover Changes in Dry land. North Kordofan State, Sudan: Case study
Author: Dafalla, Mohamed Salih; Ibrahim, Ibrahim S.; Csaplovics, Elmar
Abstract: The study area, North Kordofan State, is located in central Sudan and extends approximately between latitudes 12°40´N and 14°20´ N; and longitudes 28°10´E and 31°40´E. Determination and analysis of changes in land use/land cover (LULC) in relation to land degradation processes in the study area was the main goal of this research. Radiometrically and geometrically corrected scenes acquired by Landsat1 Multi-spectral Scanner (MSS) (path/row 187/51) (4 bands, 80m resolution and 1:500000 scale) on 01 January 1973 and Land sat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) (path/row 174/51) (7 bands, 30m resolution and 1:500000 scale) on 16 January 2001 were used. Secondary data including annual rainfall and agricultural statistics were used. Image processing procedures were performed to determine land use/land cover classes for the recent and reference images. Finally post- and pre-classification change detection approaches were used to determine changes in LULC classes during the addressed period. Cropping areas were found to be largely increased. On the other hand woodland was transformed to other LULC classes. This was confirmed by the decreasing areas of forest which coincided with decrease in vegetation cover as indicated by comparative analysis of NDVI imagery. Remote sensing methods used in this study proved to be of high potential for the detection of vegetation cover changes. Post –and pre-classification change detection methods showed patterns of change in LULC classes. The southern part of the study area showed high degree of change while the northern part witnessed slight change.
