Abstract: Sudan has very good potentialities for agricultural and nonagricultural land uses. However, climatic variability and human activities have caused significant land degradation across the country. This study aims to detect changes in land use/land cover patterns in the study area as a good indicator of land degradation and as an essential task for sustainable natural resources management planning. The study area (western Kordofan) manifests a great deal of human activities including farming and animal raising which could be the major cause of land degradation in the area. Different data sources including topographic maps, aerial photographs and satellite imageries of Multispectral Scanner (MSS) 1973, Thematic Mapper (TM) 1987and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) 2000 were used in this study. These multi-dates datasets were used for temporal analysis. Different special image processing and GIS programs were used. The main land use/land cover (LULC) classes are: dunes, gardud soil, bare soil, traditional agriculture, enclosed area, open shrub, dense forest, natural water bodies, fallow lands and grazing land. The area witnessed changes in these LULC classes during the addressed periods of 1973-1987 and 1987-2000. The study concludes that remote sensing techniques are economically feasible and effective techniques in multi-thematic natural resources survey. Furthermore, the traditional rainfed agriculture should be improved by using modern crop management practices including water harvesting and prohibition of clearance of trees and grasses
