Title: Challenges to Management of Linguistic Diversity in the Sudan
Author: Abu-Manga, Al-Amin
Abstract: The Sudan is characterized by linguistic as well as ethnic and religious diversity (around 120 languages, almost equal number of ethnic groups, and three religions). Arabic is the lingua franca of the country, known by approximately 80% of the population as first, second or third language. With its demographic and cultural weight and the support of the state, it dominates in all aspects of life, whereas the other indigenous languages are neglected and left without defined roles to play.
