dc.description.abstract Heat stress is a major abiotic factor that limits tomato production during summer season in the arid tropics of the Sudan. In summer due to high temperatures, monthly average temperatures are between 31 to 35 C, a shortage of tomatoes is common. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of heat stress on vegetative and productive development of heat sensitive and tolerant tomato genotypes and to investigate if there are any positive effects of some cultural practices such as grafting or Bacillus subtilis to increase heat tolerance of tomatoes. Several experiments were carried out under simulated temperature conditions in plant growth chambers at the Humboldt University of Berlin as well as under field conditions at the University of Khartoum, Sudan. Different plant as well as physiological parameters were recorded. The high temperatures caused tomato plants to be generally small, with thin elongated branches, resulting in reduced truss capacity to set and carry fruits of good size. Significant differences were encountered among the different genotypes for some plant and physiological parameters. Grafting may have slightly positive effects on tomato production under high temperature conditions, whereas Bacillus subtilis stimulate the vegetative growth, but have no significant effects on the tomato fruit set. Under field condition in Khartoum, Sudan other factors such as low relative humidity, insect and virus diseases as well as soil physical properties have also to be considered. Optimisation of these conditions could be important to ensure a good performance of new tolerant cultivars cultivated in summer periods in the arid tropics. en_US
