dc.description.abstract High quality seed is an essential factor to ensure good crop establishment. The seed must be viable and possess physiological traits that allow rapid germination and seedling establishment. Seed germination and vigour are the main physiological quality attributes. Since the standard germination test has proved to be an imperfect tool for measuring seed lot performance under adverse field conditions, much effort has been given to develop a test or group of tests that can determine seed vigour accurately. Vigour testing is important because it often gives a better prediction offield performance and is a more sensitive indicator of seed quality than the standard germination test (Younis, AI-Rawi and Hagop, 1990). Since a single test does not necessarily measure all aspects of seed vigour, several tests have been suggested (Hampton and Coolbear, 1990). The highest vigour status occurs at physiological maturity, after which deterioration processes begin. Deterioration involves loss of membrane integrity, slower respiration, more leakage of electrolytes and decreased enzyme activity, all of which may be reflected in lower germination percentage (Delouche and Baskin, 1973). Roberts and Osei- Bonsu (1988) identified the symptoms of reduced vigour as slower and more variable en_US
