Title: Use of Plastic Mulch for Better Performance and Yield of Okra During Winter in Sudan
Author: Mohamed Ali El Balla, Mustafa
Abstract: A study was carried out, in the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Shambat, to evaluate the effects of black, clear and green plastic mulches on growth and yield of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) during winter. Plastic mulches significantly increased soil temperature and conserved soil moisture. They increased seedling emergence, improved plant growth and resulted in early flowering and increased total yield of okra. No significant differences between the clear and green transparent mulches were obtained, but both were significantly superior to the black opaque mulch in raising soil temperature and in increasing seedling emergence . The black opaque mulch was superior to the clear and green transparent mulches in conserving soil moisture and increasing plant growth , early flowering and total yield. The black, clear and green plastic mulches increased total yield by 84.9%, 46.0% and 46.9%, respectively, compared to the control
