Abstract
The objective of this paper is to assist in establishing a guide to the geometric design of urban streets in Sudan. The design of new roads and enhancement of existing roads using a unified codc of highway design applicable in Sudan is quite important. The basic geometric design criteria inerfide design speed, sight distances, and road's cross-sectional elements, horizontal and vertical alignments in addition to roads intersections. The use of specific design criteria at a particular location should be made on the basis of actual studies of the location. The recommended values of geometric design criteria for urban streets are within the range of the desirable standards in most of the international highway design manuals. To check the validity of the suggested guidelines to suit Sudan, field work of three existing roads in Khartoum was carried out. The results obtained clearly indicated that these guidelines are applicable in Sudan.
