dc.description.abstract Back ground : The intrauterine device ( IUCD) is used by 100 million women over the world , but its continued use is complicated by expulsion , bleeding , pain and other complications, the discontinuation due to bleeding is common and hence, the importance of proper insertion and monitoring during and after insertion . Objectives: To reveal the role of vaginal ultrasonography in assessment of uterine bleeding and relative position of the device within the uterus . Setting :Yemen Family Association Clinic , Al-Hekma Hospital and Al-Gomhori Teaching Hospitals and Candidates Clinic , in TAIZ Design : A prospective case-controlled study. Study plan : 405 Subjects using IUCD Cu-T 380, study group of 301, and control group of 104 subjects. All of them were examined ultrasonographically , with measurement of 5 IUCD-F,IUCD-IOand endometrial thickness. Results : The IUCD –F distance was significantly higher in study group than in controls , and the reverse with IUCD-IO distance. Endometrial thickness did not differ . Conclusion : Proper placement of the IUCD as high up in the endometrial cavity as possible will reduce the occurrence of bleeding . So the insertion by the pull-method would be more appropriate than the push-method. Concomitant use of methergin, to harden the uterus, will decrease the possibly of perforation en_US
