Title: Pattern of Paediatric Emergency Admission & Some Quality of Service Parameters in Three Hospitals in Khartoum State

Abstract: This is prospective hospital base study was conducted at emergency paediatric hospitals in Khartoum state during study period (1/6/2003 – 30/Nov/2003). The main objective of this study to asses, the major causes of admission and to know what types of set-up are available in out patient's clinics. 3041 of children studied 1762 (57.9%) of them were male and 1279 (42.1%) were females. Male to female ratio was 1.4 :1 . All relevant information including personal data investigation and out come were recorded in questionnaire. The main causes of emergency attendance were found as follow: Pneumonia accounted for 671 ( . %), diarrhoeal diseases 581 (19.1%), malaria 25 (8. %), and malnutrition 203 (6.7%). In spite of a high incidence of ARI among the children; but diarrhoeal diseases and their complication was found the first responsible to mortality and morbidity. A number of preventable risk factors that predispose to acute illnesses mortality were identified in lack of education and immunization, parental illiteracy, low socioeconomic status, poor hygiene, indoor pollution and misdistribution of service. In spite of all countries developed by researches & training, there is clear evidence lake of staff training, limited hospitals capacity, equipment for managing paediatric emergencies in a proper way.
