Author: Chuol, Kuma
Abstract: Many cases of PROM are received in out patients clinics of obstetrics and gynaecology in different hospitals of Khartoum State. No protocol for management of cases of PROM. This descriptive, prospective hospital based study conducted to study conservative versus active management of PROM at Khartoum Teaching Hospital and Omdurman Maternity Hospital from July 2002 to July 2003. The data in this study were collected by using questionnaire, the sample size was 70 patients. It was found that PROM increases the rate of C/S delivery, and conservative management reduced the incidence of operative delivery. The risk of infection was negligible in the patients who were managed following a septic procedures. Conservative management enhances foetal lung maturity and it allows time for cervical ripening. Digital vaginal examination should be avoided in cases of PROM unless termination of pregnancy is decided. Conservative management should be encourage as well as use of steroids in preterm PROM.
