Title: Pre- and Post-operative Clinical Data of Patients Admitted to Intensive Care Units in Two Main Hospitals in Khartoum State
Author: DAOUD, MUSTAFA
Abstract: This is a descriptive study aiming at studying the demographic and clinical data of the patients who were post-operatively admitted to the Intensive Care Units at Khartoum Teaching Hospital and Soba University Hospital during the period October 2002 to April 2003. The data was collected using a questionnaire, filled by the admitting anesthetic registrar. The patient was then followed up to record his length of stay in the ICU and the outcome. Data was summarized in a master-sheet and analyzed both manually and using ‘Excell’ computer programme. The total study population was 73 cases. Among the admitted patients, 26% were children below 16 years of age. Males constituted 60.3% of the study cases. The majority of the study population were elective (68.5%), and abdominal gastro-intestinal surgeries (63.01%). No patients operated under regional anesthetic techniques were admitted to the ICU during the study period. Major bleeding was the commonest intra-operative complication among the study population. Intra-operative monitoring devices were not to the required standards. Mean length of stay in the ICU for our study cases was 3.2 (+/- 2.5) days; and their mortality rate was 20.5%. We recommended establishment of ICU admission and discharge protocols; development of more properly staffed and equipped ICUs, operating theatres and general wards; and multidisciplinary team supervision for ICU patients.
