Title: The Effect Of Pregnancy And Pregnancy Complicated By Hypertension Onrenal Function

Abstract: The objectives of this study are to assess the effect of pregnancy (in the third trimester) and pregnancy complicated by hypertension on renal function in Sudanese pregnant women. The study was carried out utilizing 83 women, including 30 non-pregnant women and unmarried (control), 30 pregnant women at the third trimester, and 23 women with pregnancy complicated by hypertension. Their ages ranged from 17- 38 years. Serum was analyzed for creatinine, urea, uric acid, albumin, calcium, sodium, and potassium. The group of normal pregnant women showed significantly (P< 0.05) decreased concentrations of, creatinine, urea, albumin, and calcium, compared to the non-pregnant women. However serum uric acid, sodium and potassium, did not show any changes. The group of women with pregnancy complicated by hypertension had significantly (P< 0.05) increased concentrations of, creatinine, urea, uric acid, and potassium compared to the normal pregnant women. Beside that the women with pregnancy complicated by hypertension showed a significant (P< 0.05) decrease in serum albumin and calcium compared to normal pregnant women. While sodium did not show any significant change. When the women with pregnancy complicated by hypertension were compared to the control, they showed significantly (P< 0.05) increased concentrations of, creatinine, uric acid, and significant (P< 0.05) decrease in serum albumin, and calcium, while the serum urea, and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) did not show any significant change.
