Title: Effect of Substituting Yellow Maize (Zea mays) For Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) on Broiler Performance

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to study the nutritional value of yellow maize when it substitutes sorghum grain as source of energy at levels 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% in broiler rations. One hundred and forty unsexed one day old (Ross) broiler chicks were randomly assigned to five approximately isocaloric, isonitrogenous diets labeled as follows: Diet (A) containing sorghum 100% (control, 60% of the diet), diet (B) 75% sorghum 25% maize, diet (C) 50% sorghum 50% maize, diet (D) 25% sorghum 75% maize and diet (E) maize (100%). Each treatment had four replicates with 7 birds/replicate. The experiment lasted for 6 weeks. Feed intake, live body weight, and body weight gain had been recorded weekly. The results showed that chicks fed on diet (A), (B) and (C) had a significant (P < 0.01) increase in feed intake, live body weight, body weight gain, hot and cold carcass weights compared to those fed on diet (D) and (E). Chicks fed diet (A) and (B) had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on protein efficiency compared to those fed diet (E) which was the 5 lowest. Broiler chicks, supplemented with diet (B) and (C) showed a significant (P < 0.05) effect on carcass hot dressing percentage compared to those fed diet (E) and (A) while those fed diet (D) were the lowest. The significant (P < 0.05) serum glucose level was obtained by chicks fed diet (B) while those, fed on the other four diets were similar and lower in serum glucose. The treatment had a significant effect (P < 0.01) on serum total protein. Chicks fed diet (A), (B) and (E) were the highest, while the lowest serum total protein was observed on those fed diet (D). All the treatments had no significant (P > 0.05) effect on feed conversion ratio, cold carcass dressing percentage, liver and abdominal fat weights, serum cholesterol, serum calcium and inorganic phosphorus levels. As a conclusion, diet (A), (B) and (C) were superior than the other two diets in broiler performance
