Title: Nutritive Value of some Oil Seed Cakes in Sudan
Author: Ahmed Osman Elemam, Anass
Abstract: This study was carried out to evaluate the nutritive value of sunflower, groundnut, sesame and cotton seed cakes as protein concentrates in terms of approximate analysis and gas production. The value of crude protein in decorticated groundnut seed cake was high (51.51%), while cotton seed cake and sunflower seed cake gave lower values (34.79% and 34.43%, respectively). Ether extract ranged from 5.68% in sunflower seed cake to 8.99% in cotton seed cake. Crude fiber content ranged from 8.77% in decorticated groundnut seed cake to 31.29% in cotton seed cake. The minimum value for metabolizable energy in all seed cakes was 9.8 MJ/kg DM and was recorded in cotton seed cake. Low fiber sample recorded higher value of total gas production than samples with higher fiber content. Gas production rates were 0.08, 0.07, 0.06, 0.05 and 0.02 per hour for sesame, decorticated groundnut, undecorticated groundnut, sunsflower and cotton seed cake, respectively. Oil seed cakes exhibited a wide range of chemical composition and in vitro gas production.
