Title: Effect of Season of Calving And Parity Order on Lactation Performance in Crossbred Dairy Cow
Author: Mahadi Ahmed, Maha
Abstract: This study was carried out to investigate the effects of season of calving, and parity order on lactation yield and lactation length of the dairy hered in the University of Khartoum farm. The study comprised 31 lactation records of 50 crossbred cows, cover in the period 2005-2009. The data were analyzed by general linear model using SPSS programme. The records were arranged according to season of calving into dry summer season (March-June), wet summer season (July-October) and winter season (November-February). The records were also grouped according to parity order. The results showed an overall mean lactation yield of 3007.5kg. The year of calving exerted a significant effect on lactation yield, while the season of calving had a non-significant effect. The highest lactation yield was in the dry summer calving season, while the lowest lactation yield was registered in the wet summer calving season. The parity order also had a non-significant effect on lactation yield. The highest lactation yield was in the fifth lactation the sixth lactation and the fourth lactation. However, the lowest lactation yield was recorded for the first two lactations. The overall mean of lactation length was 375.9 days, and the year of calving significantly affected lactation length. However, the season of calving had a non-significant effect on lactation length. The longest lactation was witnessed in the dry summer calving season, while the shortest was recorded in the wet summer calving season. The parity order, on the other hand, exerted a non-significant effect on lactation length. The longest was recorded in the fourth parity, while the shortest was found in the first parity.
