Title: Effect of Dietary Ground Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Root Additive on Broiler Performance

Abstract: A study was conducted to determine the effect of dietary ground ginger later root on the growth performance of broiler chicks. One hundred and sixty, one day old unsexed chicks (Cobb) were reared for 42 days. Feed and water were provided adlibitum. The chicks were divided into four treatments, 40 chicks in each, and replicated four times (10 birds/ replicate) using a complete randomized design. Four experimental diets were formulated to be approximately isocalaric and isonitrogenous to meet the requirements of broiler chicks, using different levels of ground ginger root (0%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 0.75%). Data were collected on weekly feed intake, body weight and feed conversion ratio. At the end of experimental period, all birds were weighed and slaughtered. The carcasses and liver were weighed; dressing percentage and relative liver were calculated. The results showed that the addition of ground ginger foots had no significant effect on feed intake for the first four weeks, whereas there was a significant increase of feed intake in week five and six. The treatment had no significant effect on total feed intake, feed conversion ratio and dressing percentage, but there was a significant increase in total gain. Relative liver weight showed a significant decrease by feeding ginger. A significant increase weight at the level (0.25%) with supplementation of ground ginger root at level 0.25% of the ration and increase in carcass yield and total weight gain about 7.3% more than control and highest returns.
