Title: Habasha, Abyssinia and Ethiopia: Some Notes Concerning a Country’s Names and Images
Author: Ahmed, El Amin Abdel Karim
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explain briefly the origin of the names Habasha, Abyssinia and Ethiopia as well as their derivatives. It also draws attention to the positive and negative attitudes of the educated and politically conscious Amhara and Tigreans concerning the use of the aforementioned appellations by outsiders. It continues to enumerate some of the mythical, conventional and scholarly images that have been associated with these names in the imagination of men and women at different periods of history, beside the self-images perceived by the Amhara and Tiqreans about themselves and their country and which they project to others
