Abstract

This research is a semantic study for the books of Gareeb Al Hadith ( strange words of Holy Hadith). It aims at pointing out the development and changes that appear upon words which a number of scholars of the strange words of Hadith explainers devoted their effort and time to explain. These words show a historical stage for a continuous movement of the Arabic language to provide the needs of its users for words. The study follows the deductive inductive method by following the occurrence of those words and explaining their origins and uses at that time, then deducing the changes happen either by expanding its semantic field to include a large number of denotations or by narrowing the same semantic filed to be limited to a definite meaning or may be deployed from one semantic filed in another area. This is done by the aid of the recent linguistic theories for analyzing meaning. The study leads to a number of results ; the important of these are: the books of strange Hadith are rich linguistic resources that should not be ignored for enriching the Arabic language , because these books contain linguistic debates related to the changes that occur over words. These word may help in compiling a historical dictionary for the Arabic language. Also Islam has a role in adding new meanings for the words which prove the flexibility of the Arabic language in receiving new uses. The metaphor has its own role in this development, specially moving the meaning from concrete objects to abstract word. For real concrete meaning are earlier in existence than abstract meaning. The study recommends exploring the relationship between the words stated in the strange Hadith in their semantic filed of the recent time and stating its development by the studying the derivations and their relationship to the semantic development and the effect of each upon the other.
