Effect of Watering Interval and Plant Density on Growth and Fodder Yield of Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.)Taub)

Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during 2007 season in the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture at Shambat to study the effect of watering interval and planting densities on growth and yield of guar (Cyamopsis trtragonoloba (L.) Taub). The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replicates. The watering intervals used were 7, 14, and 21 days and planting density treatments consisted of 2, 4 and 6 Kg/ha. Characters studied included: plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area index, number of branches, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight per plant, number of days to 50% flowering, number of nodules per plant and nodules fresh and dry weight. The fresh and dry fodder yield and protein content were also determined. The results showed that watering interval had no significant effect on all attributes expect leaf area index, nodules fresh and dry weight plus fodder protein content. On the other hand, planting density had insignificant effect on all attributes measured in this study except stem diameter and nodules dry weight. The interaction between watering interval and planting density was not significant on most attributes and the highest yield (20 ton/ha) was obtained in treatment irrigated every 7 days and planted at a seed rate of 4kg /ha
