Effect of Spacing on Growth and Forage Yield of Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.Tayp)

A field experiment was carried out in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum at Shambat during the summer season (April to June 2007) to study the effect of four spacing treatments (10, 20, 30 and 40 cm) of two guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) genotypes on growth and fodder yield. Split-plot design with four replications was used for the layout of the experiment. Data were collected at 30, 45, 60 and 75 days after planting on plant height, stem diameter, fresh weight, dry weight, density, number of days to 50% flowering, number of branches/plant and shoot protein content. Spacing treatments showed no significant effect on all parameters studied except fresh weight and dry weight, while number of branches per plant and number of plants/m at harvest were significantly affected. The performance of the two guar lines were similar hence, no significant different in all parameters studied was obtained except in number of branches. The spacing x lines interaction was not significant in all parameters studied, except number of branches per plant and number of plants per unit area.
