Effect of N P K Fertilizer and Sowing Date on Growth and Yield of Snap Beans in Shambat Area

Abstract
Field experiment was carried out on 21st Nov. 2007 in the field of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum, Shambat (latitude 15° 36` N, longitude 32° 32`), to investigate the effects of NPK fertilizer and sowing date on growth and yield of snap beans. “Paulista” cultivar of snap beans was used. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replicates. Seeds were sown on 21st week of November and the 21st of December (2007). Three levels of NPK fertilizer (17:17:17) were used, 82, 165, and 330kg/ha. Half the dose was applied one month after planting and the second half two weeks later. NPK fertilizer application had significant effect on the leaves number and number of days to 50% flowering at 165 and 330 kg/ha, while it had no significant effect on these parameters at 82 kg/ha. NPK fertilizer application had no significant effect on plant height, leaf area index (LAI), plant fresh weight, plant dry weight, total fresh weight of pod, total number of green pod per plant, pod weight, and pod diameter. This may be attributed to the lower dose of the fertilizer at 82 was sufficient for plant growth and hence there was no significant difference. The first sowing date in the third week of November increased all growth parameters significantly compared to the second sowing date in the 21st of December. The different sowing dates had no significant effect on pod length and pod weight, while there was significant difference between the different sowing dates on total fresh weight of pod, total number of green pod per plant and pod diameter. There was no significant interaction between NPK fertilizer application and sowing date on leaves number, leaf area index (LAI), total yield per plant, pod length and pod weight, while there was significant interaction on plant height, number of days to 50% flowering, plant fresh weight, plant dry weight, total number of green pod per plant and pod diameter.
