Abstract

In this volume, the writers Dr. Paul Shaw and Dr. Charles Griffin shed a light on an important issue, related to the financing health care in sub – Saharan Africa through user fees and insurance. A/ User fees: This chapter concentrates on user charges in public health facilities and the substantial positive impact these charges have on the efficiency and equity of health financing in Africa. The chapter also assesses the impact fees had on the utilization of health services in many African countries. B/ Insurance: Health insurance aims to protect the welfare of the individuals who fall seriously ill. By pooling financial contributes from many people, so the insurance plans can cover the hospital expenses. This chapter concentrates on the principles of selffinancing health insurance.
