Abstract

This study is an attempt to examine the phenomenon of unemployment and its impacts on the graduates from universities and higher institutes. The study emphasized the causes of unemployment and the proposed solutions. The study adopted a descriptive analytical statistical approach and relies on secondary data from various sources such as statistics of the central bureau of statistics, work shops papers official reports from relevant ministries: ministry of social welfare and development, ministry of labour and Administrative Reform and Scientific Research. In addition, the questionnaire was used as a source of primary data. A sample of unemployed and registered graduates were chosen randomly. The results of the study reveal that the causes of unemployment are the expansionary educational policies, which are not conformed with the needs of the labour market, the economic liberalization policies and privatization which tightened the labour market and that: low retes of investment and economic growth had not contributed significantly to the absorption of the increasing numbers of the graduates
