Abstract
Two farm experiments were conducted; 1. The first was in the Demonstration Farm of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Institute-Shambat to study the effect of some cultural practices such as planting methods, spacing, and harvesting intervals on growth, herbage yield, and oil content of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus); from Feb. 2004-May 2005. 2. The second experiment was carried out in the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Institute-Khartoum to study the effect of irrigation intervals on growth yield and oil content of lemongrass; from Feb 2004-Feb 2005. To study the above mentioned factors; some parameters were taken such as, number of tillers, plant height, leaves and roots fresh weight/plant, productivity/Feddan and oil content of fresh and dry leaves. The first experiment showed that the interaction between flat, the spacing of 50 cm, and 2.5 months harvesting interval gave the highest herbage yield of lemongrass. Whereas the interaction between ridges, 50 cm spacing, and the harvesting interval of 2.5 months gave the highest oil content of fresh leaves. The interaction between for flat, 75 cm spacing, and 2.5 months harvesting interval gave the highest oil content of dry leaves. The results of the experiment of water regime shows that 7 days irrigation interval gave the highest herbage yield in the three harvests, and the highest oil content of fresh leaves in the first harvest, 14 days irrigation interval gave the highest oil content of fresh leaves in the second ad third harvests and the highest oil content of dry leaves in the three harvests.
