Abstract
Title of research: Popular Poetry in Gadarif State in Terms of persistence and change. (Poet: Mirgani El‐Kardussi as an example). Previous studies have not tackled convincingly issues related to Popular Poetry, i.e. .DOBET and its social environment in terms of their capability to remain unchanged. For instance, how the past influences the present and what impacts have both of them on a given society? The above mentioned questions trigger this research entitled: Subject matters of Popular Poetry in Gadārif State in Terms of persistence and change. (Poet: Mirgani El‐Kardussi as an example). The research contains four interrelated chapters, enhanced with six subject matters introduced by the aforementioned poet. These subject matters are: "Alaasi Musdar", "Hunting Musdar", "Musdar of Time", "Songs of Nature"," Songs of Pride" and "Love Songs" . The research redefined continuity in the sense of perpetuation both in shape and essence. In addition to lexemes that build the DOBET and the Musdar. The researcher, also, redefined the term Change as the spontaneous continuity through a given time and space. The research probed meanings of subject matters and lexemes that form the texture of such poetry in a way that exposes the extreme influence of the genuine past upon the evolving ز present in spite of the latter's effect on the instinct and common sense. For instance, Musdar of Time epitomizes such impact of the past where the poet laments the beautiful past and its glorious moments regardless of new social, economic and political developments. The research, also, touches on internal and external factors causing social change in an attempt to define the question of the research: conflict between tradition and modernity. In conclusion, folk poetry as the main pillar of the folk literature still continues to function positively in society. It still inculcates communal values and ideals beside its spiritual thrill .Ironically, it plays a major role in settling tribal conflicts, and however, it may also be the cause of such conflicts.
