Abstract

In chapter 1 Abu Sin`s essay deals with the environmental causes and implications of population displacement in Sudan. In chapter 2 Hassaballa and Eltigani`s essay continues Abu Sin’s discussion by analyzing two case studies (the Gazira scheme and Kenena sugar company). The authors argue that the colonial mode of production, which aimed primarily at exploiting local resources, transformed the traditional subsistence economy into an export oriented one. Elshazli discusses the sociocultural dimensions of displacement in chapter 3. he argues that the rapid social change experienced by the displaced population is a process of alienation, extraction and abstraction from cultural roots that provide the symbolic meaning for existence as well as the mechanisms of social control and interaction. Wol`s essay in chapter 4 examines the absorption of displaced students from southern Sudan into northern schools. In chapter 5 Eltigani discusses the health problems facing the displaced population in settlements in greater Khartoum and the underlying factors that may contribute to observed health conditions. Mahran examines the issues of displacement, food aid and national security in chapter 6, he establishes that the drought of ك 1984-1985 had a significant negative impact on food production, as a result the degree of dependency on food aid has increased. In chapter 7 Elmugaly provides a critical assessment of the institutional structures created by the Sudanese governments to handle the problems of the displaced population. Eltom`s essay on chapter 8 examines how the UNDP, the UN emergency unit and other agencies currently view the issue of displacement and it’s various ramifications in Sudan. In chapter 9 Eltigani recommends ways to address the crisis of population displacement in Sudan.
