Performance of four date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) cultivars under field Conditions at Shambat, Sudan Name: Ayat Sulieman Essa Hamad Degree: M. Sc. Horticulture Abstract: An experiment was carried out in the fruit nursery, located at the University of Khartoum Farm at Shambat, to evaluate growth and development characteristics of four introduced date palm cultivars for a period of 13 months. The cultivars were Barhee, Khalas, Abo Moan, and Fard Abid. The plantlets were planted at 8 m spacing and depth of 80 cm. Data were recorded on plant height, stem circumference, leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaflets per leaf, leaflet length, mid rib circumference, ratio of canopy to stem, length to first spine and leaf disorders. The results revealed significant differences among the four date palm cultivars in plant height, leaf width and leaf disorders during the period between the fifth and the eighth month from planting. However, the differences in stem circumference, number of leaves, length of leaves, length of leaflets, and mid rib circumference were found in the period between the first and the eighth month. Significant differences in canopy to stem ratio among the four date palm cultivars were noted in the period between the fourth and the eighth month as well as in the first month from planting. The best growth characteristics were shown by the cultivar Fard Abid, followed by Khalas and Abo Moan. Barhee, on the other hand, had the least growth measurements. In fact, the plants of Fard Abid and Abo Moan started producing offshoots during the experimental period
