Abstract
The most common widespread health risk associated with drinking water is microbial contamination, the consequences of which mean that its control must always be of paramount importance. Microbial contamination of major urban systems has potential to cause large outbreaks of water borne diseases. Nevertheless, the majority (around 80%) of the global population without access to improved drinking-water supplies resides in rural areas.
