Abstract
Work teams have increasingly become an essential tool for
organization development, strengthening the role of employees and
enhancing their participation towards better performance and
greater effectiveness. As many other organizations, The Saudi
Arabian Electricity Company has used teams for quite some time
for enhancing the latter mentioned objectives within its own
organizational setup. The present study has therefore taken as its
objective to investigate the state of teams in the said company with
particular reference to their inception and development, their
performance and the problems they have thus far encountered .
And the finding of the study are envisaged to be useful for arriving
at some realistic and applicable suggestions that may help to
further promote the structure, better performance and leadership
work teams within the mentioned company.
In doing so, the study has endeavored the test a set of ٣ main
interrelated hypothesis, expressed as follows:-
• There is a discernible move from Predominantly
individualistic pattern of behavior to a group oriented one
amongst team members in the Saudi Arabian Electricity
Company, attributable mainly to the gradual acquisition of
group spirit from the previously frequent use of teams .
• Teams have significantly contributed to the development of
skills, capacity and knowledge of their participants directly
and indirectly through mutual interaction of the participants,
and the gradual build-up of experience regarding work in
teams.
• The leaderships of teams in the Saudi Arabian Electricity
Company have shown increasing efficiency and effectiveness
related to their experience, training and rank within the
company.
The study has used the questionnaire method to collect the relevant
data from a random sample of teams participants in the Saudi
Arabian Electricity Company. The questionnaire form is attached
to the report of the study as appendix (A) . It also supported the
questionnaire bases survey with data and opinion generated by
interviewing (٧٧) teams leaders in the same Company and the data
gathered by the questionnaire based survey were then computer
analyzer employing the SPSS statistical package.
The findings of the study have included the following main
conclusions
١- Organized mainly around the objectives of quality
enhancement and gradual improvisation, quality teams in
the Saudi Arabian Electricity Company need greater team
cohesiveness and stronger team fabric.
٢- The teams lack a established system of a ccountability and
discipline to enforce greater commitment and better
performance by participants .
٣- The variations in each of age and education in the
composition of teams in the company are important factors
that influence the degree of instruction and enthusiasm and
performance.
٤- So do the factors of team homogeneity and closeness And
also based on the finding of the study and further.
٥- The limited authority allowed to team leaders, and social
ties such as friendship also stand out as factors limiting the
enforcement of discipline in teams.
Additionally, this author has presented a suggested model for
the process of team building which adds one initial “planning
and preparation” step to that process which according to current
literature and practice, consists of ٥ steps .
the study is organized into ٥ chapters including an introduction
(Ch.١) a theoretical framework (Ch.٢), an introductory account
of the company within which the study was conducted (Ch. ٣), a
presentation of the author`s own personal experience with teams
(within the company itself), and final fifth chapter presenting
and analyzing the empirical data obtained, and highlight and
discussing the finding of the study .
