Abstract

This research investigates the changes in rural economy in El Getaina area (White Nile State ). The Overall objective of this research is to study the changes in rural economy, its causes and impacts. Primary and secondary are the main sources of data . A sample of one hundred and sixty seven (167) respondent were randomly selected, studied and analyzed, correlational measurements and chisquare test's were also used . Historical, descriptive, statistical and analytical approaches were applied. The study shows great changes in rural economic system, which include decrease in cultivated area, change in crops farming system, change in type and number of livestock and decrease in fish production . The impact of such changes include decrease in individual income , increase in paid labour percentages and increase in out-migration. The study reveals that there is relative improvement in social services such as electricity and telecommunication. To mitigate the observed deterioration and change in rural economy suggestions are made for the introduction of irrigated agricultural schemes and encouragement of private investment on agriculture, livertock and fisheries, and the establishment of windbreaks is necessary.
