Abstract
This study was carried out in South Kordofan State in central Sudan, one of the most war-affected areas. It investigates the changes in some activities children have been performing in the Kadugli Locality (the capital of the State) after the signature of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005. Child labor in the area is considered to be a consequence of the previous war; unfortunately, the phenomenon continues post war and has started to take on different patterns. The study is based on both primary and secondary methods for data collection; primary methods include interviews, while secondary data was obtained from books, reports, formal institutions and NGOs. The main findings of the study were that most laboring children in the area were returnees who returned to the area after the signing of the CPA. Their families had lost most of their assets during war time so children's work became important. Moreover the poor economic conditions these families found in their places of origin after return was other factor for children to join the work. The study recommends addressing both child and family problems as root causes of child labor. Therefore programs that aim to empower the poor families by providing income-earning opportunities and increase access of both formal and informal education for all children is an effective strategy in eliminating or reducing the number of children employed in the market
