Abstract
The main objective of this study was to carry out demand analysis of Saudi Arabia's imports of the Sudanese horticultural products (mangoes, water melon seeds and cantaloupe) during the period 1985-2006. Descriptive statistical method was used to study the development and performance of Saudi imports from Sudan and from other countries. Econometric analysis was also used the almost ideal demand system (AIDS) to estimate parameters for counting elasticties and to forecast demand for these products. Secondary data was collected from the General Statistics Department, Ministry of Planning and economics in Saudi Arabia. Similar information were also collected from the Horticultural Administration Sudan's Ministry of Agriculture and Forest and the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development. The most important countries exporting mangoes to Saudi market are Pakistan, India, Sudan and Egypt. The Sudan share in the Saudi mango market was 31.8% in 1992 but declined to 2.1% in 2008 because of Yemen entry to Saudi market where share was about 46% in 2008. The most important countries that export water melon seeds to Saudi Arabia are Sudan, India and Guatemala. The Sudan share was 96.6% in 1991 but declined to 29.1% in 2008 because of Egypt entry to Saudi market, it was about 68.9% in 2008. For cantaloupe, the most important exporting countries are Syria, Iran, Turkey and Sudan. Sudan share was staple but small. The AIDS results showed that the Sudan the price elasticity of demand for mango was -0.8 and the income elasticity w 0.58. Regarding water melon seeds, the price elasticity of demand for Sudan was -1.7 and income elasticity was 1.82. For cantaloupe, the price elasticity of demand was -1.02 and income elasticity was 1.16. The demand for Sudan horticultural products are increasing due to demand forecasting equations. The study recommends increase of market effiency through facilitating transportation and organizing special shows for these products to avail more information so as to face competition from other countries and to increase Sudan share in this market
