Abstract

Study Title : Aggressiveness among Southern Sudan Civil War Ex – Combatants and the effectiveness of a proposed psychological counseling programme for reducing its degree . Name : Yassir Mohamed Suliman Mohamed The objective of this research is to determine the prevalence and degree of aggressiveness among the Ex - Combatants who participated in the long Civil War in southern Sudan that lasted for almost half a century ( 1955 – 2005). and to develop a psychological extension programme to handle and reduce the degree of aggressiveness . The researcher assumed that the ex - combatants would manifest higher degrees of aggressiveness when compared with other soldiers who did not take part in the Civil War . The research sample for testing the degree of aggressiveness was composed of (150) of the Sudanese Armed Forces Soldiers ; (100) excombatants and (50) soldiers who did not take part in the civil war . 7 The developed psychological counseling programme to handle and reduce the degree of aggressiveness among ex –combatants has been applied on a sample of (30) ex –combatants in a demonstration to test its applicability and effectiveness . The researcher used the descriptive method to measure the degree of aggressiveness and used the experimental method to test the applicability and effectiveness of the developed psychological programme through pre – and – after measurement of its impact on one group . The collected data has been analysed using the relevant statistical techniques. The findings of the research as conveyed by the results of aggressiveness measurement scale through all its (5) tests confirmed the researcher’s assumption that the degree of aggressiveness is higher among the civil war ex - combatants compared with that among the soldiers who did not participate in the civil war . The application of the developed psychological extension programme on the selected ex- combatants resulted in a statistically significant decline in the degree of aggressiveness among the selected sample members as compared to its degree before the application of the programme Depending upon the above findings the researcher recommends the following : Paying great attention to the problems of the civil war ex - combatants, especially those of psycho–social nature as a predisposing factor for their social reintegration and reconciliation within their civil communities . 8 Provision of the necessary funds for implementing the relevant demobilization and re – integration programmes as soon as possible to safe-guard against the dangerous outcomes that affect the community in general ,in presence of un-catered for aggressive ex - combatants among its members .
