Abstract

This study deals with the support which the agricultural sector (AS) provides to the industrial sector (IS) in Sudan during the period (1997- 2007). The study attempts to answer a number of questions about the nature of (IS) and (AS) in Sudan; what support of the (AS) provides to the (IS)? To what extent and how contribution to the development of the (IS); and what are the problems and constrains that limit that contribution. To answer this questions the study begins with defining the (AS) and (IS) identifies, its specifications and components and the role of each sector in the economic development, from sub resources such as books, reports and related studies to provide a theoretical framework. Then to explain the relationship between the two sectors, data was collected from numerous resources including reports, official documents, databases of government ministries, related to the subject research. In addition the researcher has relied on personal interviews, with official knowledgeable, on the subject matter of study. The study has concluded that: i) there is a close link between industrial and agricultural development essential for socio economic development; ii) that the (AS) support the (IS) by providing capital, food, labor and supply rawmaterials. A number of constraints hamper the agricultural sector from playing this vital developmental role that included; i) the lack of official financial support for (AS); ii) low proactively production and poor quality of agricultural produce; and, iii) weak capital investment. Based on the above the study recommends; i) (more finance to be injected into the (AS); ii) creating forward and backward linkages between (AS) and (IS); iii) the coordination and integration of policies and plans between the two sectors; iv) and adoption of advanced production techniques to increase production and improve quality especially for commodities that have comparative advantages.
