Abstract

This study examines the importance of the role of Nongovernmental Organization “ NGOs ” in realizing sustainable rural development , applied to North Kordofan State . The success of “ NGOs” in this study is viewed mainly through their role in building Community Capacities, for self –reliance and participating in all phases of local Community development. The study then endeavors to articulate concepts, principles, objectives and organizational features of “NGOs” in general. And concentrates on rural development and strategies of sustainability in the work of “NGOs”. Subsequently to that , the study examines the policies of government in Sudan regarding “ NGOs “and their efforts within the country . The study considers also the work of “NGOs” in North Kordofan State presenting Survey of their work since 1985 . And the same theme is continued by analyzing the rural development, based on empirical data collected by two questionnaires and interviews with community leaders, and mangers of organizations related to the work of “ NGOs” in North Kordofan State . And also through group discussions with representatives of target communities. The study finds that “ NGOs ” efforts play discernable role in achieving sustainable rural development in North Kordofan state through determining strategies , objectives, policies, and priorities that are compatible with state policies on development . And in meeting the basic needs of local communities. The implications of the finding of the study in one respect imply need for further support of “NGOs” efforts through joint planning, organizing, coordinating and supervising of development activities with the regional organizations and communities relating to “NGOs” work . That is for continuously promoting the standard of living among people in North Kordofan state rural communities.
