Abstract

The issue of development is subject to great concern from various angles Naturally, this concern extends to scientific and academic circles; whereas the issue has found treatment on economic, social and political dimensions. On this basis the developmental message of regional television comes to determine the impact and contribution of local region TV on community development (focusing on Gadaref State community). This is accomplished through a case study to test the research. Hypotheses; which are: 1. Mass communication is a basic factor in development. 2. Mass communication in Gadaref State has a role in local community development. 3. Progrrammes of Gadaref State TV contribute in raising awareness as regards health and help in education and combating illiteracy. The thesis falls into a methodological frame followed by three chapters. The first chapter discusses the importance of mass communication in social change and community development in backward societies. The second chapter studies the role of TV in development using its technical potential as a mass communication medium. The third chapter looks into the contribution of Gadaref State TV in local community development, especially as to raising awareness as regards health and education in addition to combating illiteracy. In concluding the thesis, the researcher reviews the findings and recommendations towards focusing on the role of television especially as regards health and education and extending the transmission zone of the station to cover the State of Gadaref in addition to providing training and capacity building for its employees.
