Abstract

The research aimed on both theoretical and analytical aspects of the IMF policies in Sudan during the period (1978 – 2007) focusing a some macro economic indicators. The research problem concentrated on the impact of the IMF policies on the rate of economic growth, inflation, exchange rate, balance of payments and the foreign debtedness so as to examine its effectiveness in Sudan. The research hypotheses were that the IMF policies have negative impact on the rate of economic growth, inflation, exchange rate, balance of payments, and foreign debtedness as will. The study used descriptive and analytical method and used secondary data such as bank of Sudan annual reports and annual economic view of the ministery of finance and national economiy The main results of the study were that the policies of the IMF had negative impacts on macro economic variables. The devaluation of exchange rate has negative impact on balance of payments and the impact of stabilization programs led to accelerated inflation, and did not increase the growth rate of the economy. The study recommends that devaluation is not the appropriate tool to remove the deficit of the balance of payments. However, the exchange rate should be taken into considerations when economic policies are considered. Work to get to the conrention for dealing with external debt with in ternational financial institutions, and to try to bridge the budget defviat and reducing government spending directed toward the productive sectors of exchange.
