Abstract
The hypoglycemic and anti-diabetic effects of two medicinal plants, namely Medicago sativa and Guiera senegalensis, which are traditionally used in the Sudan for treatment of diabetes mellitus were studied. Their effect on the plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride levels was also evaluated in diabetic animals. The ethanolic extract of G. senegalensis re-suspended in 2% Acacia gum was orally administered to glucose-loaded rats in three different doses 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg bodyweight. The extract showed a hyperglycemic effect in these animals, which was significant for the three different doses. One g/kg from the freeze-dried aqueous extracts G. senegalensis and M. sativa caused a lowering effect in the rats loaded with glucose at 1hr and 2 hr after administration of the extracts, respectively. Four different doses from the freeze-dried aqueous extracts of G. senegalensis (200, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg) were administered to normal fasting rats. These doses did not cause any lowering effect in the plasma. glucose level of the animals that was compared to the action of the Biguanide group which, are known hypoglycemic drugs that do not cause hypoglycemia in normal subjects even when taken in excessive doses (Goodman and Gilman, 1992). The anti-diabetic effect of M. sativa and G. senegalensis aqueous extract was studied in streptozotocin- diabetic animals. One g/kg of M. sativa aqueous extract administered to STZ-diabetic rats for 7 consecutive days. This extract lowered the plasma glucose; cholesterol and triglyceride levels of these animals compared to the untreated group. 500 mg/kg of G. senegalensis aqueous extract administered to STZ-diabetic rats caused (lowering and sustainability of the plasma glucose level. However, this extract
