Abstract

The role of automatic retrieval in developing university libraries services in Khartoum State The study aims at the necessity of automatic retrieval services knowledge awareness in university libraries in Khartoum State, how far the availability of this service, the benefits that the libraries gain from it, looking for other means through which the libraries offer this service to the users and the reasons that lead to the benefit of this service. The study selects a group of hypotheses, the most important one are:- 1- Insufficient information sources to meet users needs. 2- Training the users on how to use libraries is one of the most important means to the success of automatic retrieval processes as well as trains the labors in order to provide distinctive service to the users. 3- Using technology in university libraries processes to storage and retrieval the information becomes very necessary and important. ف 4- Encouraging and facilitating borrowing among libraries is one of the most important network link features among university libraries. 5- Standards and measurements lead to the control of libraries service and produce it in a degree of proficiency and hemogenity in the production of technical processes. The researcher used the descriptive method to describe the topic of the study, also used the surveying method to focus on automatic retrieval in the university libraries as well as statistical method to analysis the data and used the auxiliary tools like questionnaire, interviews, observation. The researcher selected a random “120” samples from students and staff, and “13” samples from university libraries librarians. The study comes out with the following important results. 1- The available information sources in libraries are insufficient to meet the users needs. 2- Most libraries provide training service to users, and the most kind of training the libraries provide is the training of how to use the modern systems in libraries, then the acquaintance with libraries contents. 3- The majority of library come into agreement that the use of modern technology in the process of automatic retrieval in university libraries is very important. ص 4- Most network link important among libraries in Khartoum State is that it encourages and facilitates borrowing among libraries. 5- A great number of librarians agreed upon the importance of standards and measurements to facilitate international exchange process, it produces the service with high degree of proficiency, and the unity of technical processes production. According to previous results, the study comes out with a number of recommendations: 1- The necessity of using modem technology in the various libraries processes like internet, the retrieval upon on line, compact disk (CD) with the training of how to use them. 2- It is important to link the libraries of the one university with information network as well as link university libraries in Khartoum State to enable them to deal with each other in the process of information exchange. 3- A course on skills of research upon on line and the method of information sources research to be of high education methods for teaching library institute. 4- Exchange of clerks among various university libraries in order to train and gain experience which positively reflect on the libraries services.
