Abstract
J. L. Hanson’s “Textbook of Economics” consists of 30 chapters, while this translation into the Arabic language comprises only the first five chapters. Chapter (1) is an introduction which deals with the scope of economics, the basic principles, definitions of the subject and the relationship between economics and the other social sciences. Chapter (2) stresses the definition of production, the purpose of production which is the satisfaction of people’s wants or needs, the concept and types of wealth and the advantages and disadvantages of division of labour. Chapter (3) covers the factors or agents of production : land, labour, capital and entrepreneur. The law of diminishing returns has been explained thoroughly. The chapter also focuses on the importance of labour, its types and how to increase its efficiency. Moreover, it deals with the mobility and types of factors. Chapter (4) is allotted to the study of capital in detail and what it means to the retailer, accountant and economist. The relationship between capital and the other factors of production also has been discussed as well as the accumulation, maintenance and consumption of capital. Chapter (5) deals with the population problems in general, in Great Britain and all over the world. The ideas of Malthus have been examined thoroughly as well as the problems of overpopulation and population explosion.
