Abstract

The research aimed at knowing the views of Arabic language linguists and scholars concering the issues of synonymy, antonomy and homonymy whether they occur in Arabic language and the Holy Quran . These issues have been the topics of arguments and disagreements amongst the scholars and linguists both in the past and the present .They divided into two groups . Each group supported its views with proofs and evidences in order to refute the views of the other group , until the refit has become wide , thus, classifications emerged . The “ Descriptive Analytical Approach” has been used to collect acorpus of words , phrases and texts from Arabic language sources and references to investigate the views on synonymy , antonomy and homonymy in general as well as their occurance in Arabic language and the Holy Quran .To achieve the objectives of the research , researcher subjected Al- Imam Al -Tabari’s interpretation to adetailes study by analysing some words . The research has tow objectives ; the first objective is to know Al- Imam Al -Tabari’s viewpoints towards the three issues in the Holy Quran . The other objective is to draw acomparison to find out whether the other interpreters who interpreted the Holy Quran agree or disagree with Al- Imam Al –Tabari on the issues of synonymy antonomy and homonymy . The results of the research are as follows ; Al- Imam Al -Tabari interpreted synonymy, antonomy and homonomy according to the interpretation of lexicographers . Words are interpreted to make the meaning understandable .This is done not to verify or refute these lexical issues in the Holy Quran , because every word in the Holy Quran has its own meaning , no word can replace another . The second result is that ; the interpretaters in the first and second centuries did not try to verify or refute these issues in the Holy Quran . only the contemporary linguists have tried to connect these issues with the Holy Quran . They have even verified it . The third result is that ; these issues are available in Arabic language because of the different dialects and borrowing from other foreign languages The fourth result ; These issues regarded as advantages of Arabic language and this is the reason why it is rich with words and wide expressions
