Phyto- and physico-chemical properties of the Flavonoids isolated from Paullina pinnata (Mistica), Senna sengueana (Sa’aba) and Ficus vasta Forssk (Teen)

Abstract
Abstract The aim of this study is to isolate and identify the flavonoids extracted from three medicinal plants: i) Paullinia pinnata (Mistica) ii) Senna sengueana (Sa’aba) iii) Ficus vasta Forssk (Teen). The identification of these compounds was accomplished using advanced physico-chemical methods (IR, UV, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 1H-1H Cosy, HSQC, HMBC, APT NMR and MS). The phyto-chemical studies performed revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins. The antioxidant activity of the gross extracts revealed high activity. The activity was established using calculations of Inhibition Concentration factor (IC50). Values for Paullinia pinnata extracts with acetone and methanol were 6 and 15 _1;g/ml respectively, for Senna sengueana the acetone extract gave value of 60 _1;g/ml and for Ficus vasta the acetone and Methanol extracts gave values of 8 and 28 _1;g/ml respectively. From Paullinia pinnata the following three new flavonoids were isolated and identified: 1. 3’, 4’, 5, 5’-tetraacetoxy-3-oxo-dimethyl-2H-pyranylacetate flavone. 2. 3,4’5-triacetoxy-6,7-dioxoallylidenedimethyl flavone. 3. 4’,5,7-triacetoxy-3-diacetoxycyclohexadienyloxy flavone. From Senna sengueana the following three known flavonoids were isolated and identified: 1. 4',5,7-triacetoxy-3-O-prenylflavone. 2. 3,3R42;,4R42;,5,5R42;,7-hexaacetoxyflavan-(4U94;8)-3,4R42;,5,7-hexaacetoxyflavan. 3. 4R42;,7-diacetoxyflavan(4U94;8)-3-hydroxy-3R42;,4R42;,5,7-tetraacetoxyflavan. And from Ficus vasta the following known flavonoid was isolated and identified: 1. 3,3R42;,4R42;,5,7-Pentaacetoxyflavan. No previous worker carried out investigations on the three named plants. It is recommended that further research work be carried out to study more closely the alkaloids present in these plants and assess their biological activity. Also it may be of medicinal interest to determine the antioxidant and any other possible biological activities of the new flavonoids reported in this research.
