Abstract
The study investigated the relationship between some morphological characteristics of Acacia senegal trees with their age, gum and seed yield. The variability of gum yield between plantations and natural stands and between age groups was also examined. The trees were evaluated at the experimental research sites of EL Demokeya and EL Himaira forests in North Kordofan State. The effect of ages (5, 10, 15 and 20 years old trees) on growth characteristics (tree height, diameter and crown) and gum yield was estimated. Co-relation coefficients between growth characteristics and gum yield were estimated for natural stands and plantations (18 years old ) trees at the two sites. The parameters were evaluated in two consecutive years (1998 and 1999). The height, basal diameter and crown growth showed similar trend with age at EL Demokeya plantations. However, at EL Himaira the growth characteristics were not similar in their trend with age. Gum yield was not significantly correlated with growth parameters, except for height in natural stands at EL Demokeya in 1998. Gum yield from plantations was significantly higher than that of natural stands at EL Demokeya site. The seed yield was not significantly correlated with height, diameter and crown and crown width (correlations were r = 0.23, - 0.10 and 0.i51, respectively). The age effects on gum yield significantly differ at the two sites. Total gum yield was higher at EL Demokeya site than EL Himaira site. The study suggests that manipulation of management practices and age can improve gum yield. Also, the study demonstrated that plantations can produce gum and their yield is higher than natural stands. Further studies are needed to examine the relations of seed and gum yield and to characterize provenances and individual tree differences as basis for future improvement.
