Abstract
The thesis tackles the usages of the Artificial Intelligence in Answering the Reference Inquiries in the Libraries, and it has been chosen for many points, such as: - The increasing size and diversity of the thought intellectual production in field of the artificial intelligence applications. - The lack of studies conducted in the field of libraries in Sudan. - To answer many questions such as: o What is the role that can be played by the artificial intelligence technology applications in libraries, specially at the University of Khartoum Library? o What are the basic instructions required for the developer of the expert systems in answering the reference inquiries? o What is the method followed in transferring the reference inquiries of the beneficiaries into knowledge bases? The importance of the thesis came up as a result of the wide spread of the artificial intelligence, which became an intentional phenomenon due to the various fields of its applications. Thus, it shall be thoroughly studied in its different aspects. In addition, the general attitude of the IT and systems applied in the studied libraries should be well evaluated in order to know their effectiveness, and whether they are in need of intelligent technology. The study aims generally to recognize artificial intelligence and specially its applications fields in libraries, in addition to expert systems and their designs in reference service, together with other usable artificial intelligence applications. Also the study aims to provide technical reference service. One of the study hypotheses is that the automatic systems applied in the university libraries do not meet the needs of the information beneficiaries as to answer their reference inquiries, and thus the university libraries, as general and the Khartoum University in particular, suffer a problem in answering the reference inquiries. The study applies many scientific methods such as: the descriptive analytical one, the case study, the survey, and as well as the applied experimental methods, while data were collected through interviews, using the method of (Focus Group), in addition to the secondary sources, i.e. the documentary and non-documentary sources. Technically, and as a primary step to design an expert system in references, the researcher design a database for a sample of references available in the Khartoum University Library using (Access 2003) program. As well, the researcher made use of expert system container (Mini KSR Tool) to test it in designing the proposed expert system for both references and answering the reference inquiries. The Most Important Results are: 1. None of the studied libraries have applied any of the artificial intelligence systems, nor expert systems. 2. The Librarians do not know the artificial intelligence technology, and accordingly do not know any kind of the applications usable in libraries. 3. The Librarians do not know the technology of expert systems and the reference inquires and how to answer them. Depending on the above results the thesis recommends the following: 1. Importance of designing developed programs to teach a prescribed course on references and their services, regarding latest and recent technologies. 2. According to the vital role, that may be played in the library services, the artificial intelligence technology programs required, should be taught together with their applications. 3. Designing the programs required to train the librarians to get them acquainted with the library different technologies, including the artificial intelligence and expert systems. 4. Providing permanent registers for the reference inquires and the ways to answer them
