Abstract

This Research is about the enlightenment movement in the Modern Arab world through one of the greatest thinkers and intellectuals of that era who is Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud. The research contains 8 chapters besides the introduction, conclusion, and appendix, list of publications, and References. The general introduction: The explanations of Reason, Enlightenment as basic concept on which this research is based on and they are mentioned in many parts, so it is important to put some light on them to determine the objectives of the research. Chapter 1: Identified the role of the philosopher Ibn Rushd as a pioneer of the Enlightenment in the Arabic philosophy in the past, through putting into light his mind philosophy which going a long with the enlightenment and opening to the " other " intellectually, and his thinking method as an instance to adopt it . Chapter 2: Historical background of the enlightenment in the nineteen century through showing some of the efforts which have been held by Sheikh Jamal – Alden Alafghani, and Imam Mohammad Abdu, whose thinking have been affecting on Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud and by which you can consider them as the mentors of Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud and others . Chapter 3: Intellectual environment in the Arab world in the 20th century as general, as it is the environment where Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud affected by, and how he participated in it by his own thinking and methods, because this same environment ل that shaped Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud mentality was shaped by his own contributions. Chapter 4: I tried to explain Metaphysics and Liberalism and their relations with the logical Positivism, which his can assist in understanding Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud intellectuals points of view. Chapter 5: The Culture and interesting of Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud and how it has been seen and evaluated in the era he lived in. Chapter 6: Explanation of some of Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud enlightened opinions as invitation to progress, freedom and using Scientific Experimentation and others through his own ideas and methods. Chapter 7: The personality of Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud through lightening some of the milestone events in his life, which have great effects in forming his Psychological side, and how much this affected on putting the logical positivism methods framework in the Arab world. Chapter 8: General evaluation of Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud works highlighting shortcoming and assets; and show how he was starting in his intellectual structure and by which he was ended. In the conclusion is the critical view and comparisons discussing some areas where Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud, missed to mention in his studies, or put them into consideration, which make some gaps in his intellectual structure. Appendix : The Researcher added an annex, expressing his own personal point of view about the future of the enlightenment in the Arab world, and mention what are the steps of enlightenment should be started by.Lastly there is a list of publications and translations by Dr. Zaki Nageeb Mahmoud, for those who want further information about this important character in the Modern Arab culture. A fact worth mentioning; that our research based on the descriptive, analytical and critical methods.
