Abstract
The investigations done to mechanise cotton stalk clearance by means of short cutting blades had shown that large blade sizes are necessary. This was mainly caused by planting and ridging variations. A survey was carried out both to assess the parameters of plant growth and the force needed to lift them. The findings were intended to give a basis for the design requirements of tractor drawn equipment, but pending this, the information was used to improve the design of the hand-puller which is the present means of doing the work.
