Abstract
This study aims to explain social and economic factors that influence family planning in Sudan, with special reference to centers of family planning in Khartoum state. Other aims of the study include highlighting values, traditions and ethics that govern reproductive behaviour in the community. Historical and social survey methods were used in order to trace the development of the Sudanese family planning societies, and to determine the factors influencing them. For the purpose of data collecting a sample of 200 women aged (15-45) was used women were selected equally from those attended to the family planning centers, and those living around these centers, where statistical methods of analysis and observation have been used in the analysis of data. The study has been organized in six chapters. The first chapter includes the methodology, and methods of data collection, research problem, research significance, aims of the study, hypothesis and questions of the study, justification choicing the location, the theoretical framework and the obstacles of the study. The second chapter covers the concepts and conceptual framework. The third chapter define family, its types and functions. In the fourth chapter a review of the literature has been displayed with special concern to the socio-economical factors that affect family planning and the effect of natural increase on family and the whole community population policies in Sudan in addition to the international conferences were also displayed. The fifth chapter includes the methods of family planning and the views of Islamic thinkers on family planning, and the last analysis the field data, such as knowledge and usage of contraception, age at marriage, the relationship between level of education and size of family, whether the mother is working, family size, the effect of values on usage of contraception and family planning and the effect of mass media. Being focused on issues such as, effect of economic on reproductive behaviour, age at marriage, age at first delivery, religious values, knowledge and use of contraception, the side effect of family planning, the study has come out with the following results. (1) Promotion of economic situation and family income were found to be the most important factors behind family planning adoption. (2) The prevalence of the family planning among women was positively correlated with the level of women's education. In other words, women of lower education were found to resist family planning. (3) A number of social values and beliefs, were found strongly inhibiting family planning (4) Efficient attempts concerning family planning in Sudan were shouldered mainly by the non-governmental organization. Traditional views regarding early marriage as an advantage, were still prevailing in the society, at the time of the study 85% of women were found to have married between 15 and 24 years of their ages
