Abstract
We describe in this work and assess the performance of a community cooker, designed by Group ULOG of Switzerland, and manufactured in the Sudan by Dr. Salih Hamadto's Enterprises. The system comprises five modules, each made of a 7.1 m2 variable geometry, facetted, semiparabolic reflector, polar Mounted with a clock-work for daily tracking. Three of the pots, 80 L each, while the other two drive water boilers. Design features and fabrication procedure are described, and performance parameter studies are reported. The system proved to have good performance where typical power of one reflector at the focus was found to be 3.4 kW at 734 W/m2 isolation with efficiency of 60%, whereas the power of cooking was found to be 1.4 kW with an efficiency of 42%.This was adequate to cook food for 200 peoples meals per pot twice a day.
